Before Hiring a Consultant
Finding the right consultant for your
statistical needs can be challenging. This is largely due to the
fact that many individuals call themselves "statistical
consultants" even though they have no formal statistical
training. Here are a few considerations when choosing a
statistical consultant for help on your dissertation or research
paper:
(1) Is the consultant or organization
qualified?
Applying statistics effectively and in an
appropriate way can be challenging, even for the most
experienced statisticians. This is why a true statistician
should hold an advanced degree in statistics. While many fields
use statistics, a Ph.D. in Psychology or Business, for example,
does not qualify someone as a statistician. Many "statistical
consultants" fall into this category so be cautious, as it can
often lead to wasted time, money, and an invalid Methods
Section. Furthermore, while there are many proficient
statisticians that hold an M.S. degree in statistics, it is
always a good idea to know who will be signing off on the
validity of your data analysis. For help on a doctoral
dissertation, do you think it is reasonable for an M.S. degree
holder (even in statistics) to sign off on your dissertation as
many other consultants will do?
Neither do we. This is why at N. D. Alan Consulting, a Ph.D.
statistician will always sign off on all statistics related
methodology to insure validity of the analysis and work.
(2) Can the consultant communicate?
There are many
great statisticians, especially in research, that do not speak
English as a first language or are otherwise unable to
communicate statistical ideas effectively. A statistical
consultant should be adept at explaining complicated statistical
methodology in a clear and accessible way. At N. D. Alan
Consulting, our consultants are not only easy to understand, but
explain the methodology in the context of your particular
problem.
(3) What is the consultant's availability?
Selecting a statistical consultant that is easily reachable can
make the consulting process move along more smoothly. Therefore,
it is always a good idea to check his/her email and phone
availability before deciding on a particular consultant. At N.
D. Alan Consulting, we know that evening and weekends can be
some of the most productive times in graduate school. This is
why we are available 8am-8pm on Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm on
Saturday.
(4) Will the consultant provide free
follow-up support for their work?
Follow-up support for
data analysis and dissertation assistance is often necessary
when addressing committee members' comments, especially around
the time of the dissertation defense. Some consultants will
charge additional money for follow-up questions, clarifications,
and general support. At N. D. Alan Consulting, we offer free
follow-up phone and email support for all of our previous work
until your dissertation is approved and successfully defended.
